Lewis Jackson wins both a
Golfing and
Academic Scholarship in the United States.
Following an eight day trip across ‘the pond’ to the USA with
his father Steve, Lewis returned home today to announce that
he had been awarded his dream golf scholarship at Harding
University in Arkansas.
Whilst away, he ‘tried out’ playing golf with existing Harding
University golf team members under the watchful eye of golf
team coach, Dustin Howell. He duly impressed Coach Howell and
was ‘signed up’ as the first United Kingdom player to
represent the University in golf.
Lewis, who is still only 17, has another full year in the
junior ranks. He joined West Hove in 2004 and made very rapid
progress to become the Junior Club Champion in 2006. In 2007
he was appointed the Junior Captain and this year he won the
Junior Championship for a second time. He is currently
studying in his second year for a golf-related Sports Diploma
at Chichester College with fellow West Hove member Brett
Thompson. Other West Hove junior members Max Card, Jonny
Ingram, Luke Giles and Dan Milligan also attend the College.
Scholarships such as this are not awarded without sound
backing. So it was with great pleasure that dad Steve and mum
Lindsey were able to rely on fantastic support from Lewis’s
mentors - people such as Alan Covey (Sussex County Golf
Union), Stuart Simpson (Course Manager at Chichester College),
Tim Barclay (Headmaster at Hove Park School), Jason Gilroy
(Lewis’ short-game coach), James Wilmott (Lewis’ swing coach)
and our own Megan Bibby. They all provided references and
testimonials which assisted in the process which enabled the
University to grant a 50% funding, for the first time in their
history, for both a golfing and academic scholarship.
Harding University is situated in the delightful town of
Searcy and is nationally ranked within the top 10% of
universities in the United States. It has welcomed several
world leaders, such as George Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Mikhail
Gorbachev and John Major to speak on campus in the past.
Lewis will start his 4-year Exercise Science Degree next
August and will travel extensively around the southern States
of America representing his University, known as ‘The Bisons’,
in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletics Association)
Division 2.
Speaking from his home today, Lewis said he cannot wait to get
started and follow in the footsteps of Stacey Rodger, another
West Hove junior to win an American golf scholarship. He is
grateful for the support shown by everyone at West Hove over
the years and reported that his parents were absolutely thrilled – as are
everyone at West Hove GC. We will, of course, follow Lewis’
progress in the years to come.

The WHGC Juniors’
Section Annual General Meeting and prize-giving was held on
19th October 2008.
As usual it was very
well attended and the Club Captain, Dennis Baker, was very
pleased to welcome so many junior members and their parents
before moving on to present the prizes. At the meeting Jonny
Ingram was elected as Juniors’ Captain and Adam Hatcher as
Vice-Captain for 2008/9.
The Club has been advised of further recognition of our
juniors. Dan Milligan has again been selected by the English
Golf Union's South Region to receive coaching at their
headquarters at Woodhall Spa between 24-26 October and will
play in a match against the South West Region. Lewis Jackson
and Jonny Ingram have also been chosen to form part of the
SCGU's Junior elite squad which will receive intensive
training at La Manga in Spain early in 2009. |

Our 16-year-old
Juniors’ Vice-Captain, Jonny Ingram, played the rounds of
his life today to become the runner-up in the WHGC Club
Championship. Playing off 5, he shot a gross level-par 70 in
the morning and followed up with a 71 in the afternoon, good
enough for him to win the Nick O’Byrne Trophy (for the best
net score in the Championship) by 4 shots with a fabulous net
131 (9 under par). The photo shows Jonny addressing the
Members following his success.

The
Dockerill's Junior Brighton League (JBL) |
|
The Dockerill's
Junior Brighton League (JBL) is a competition between 9 local
golf clubs. Teams of 6 play at each of the venues throughout
the summer with the best 4 Stableford points scored counting
towards the team total. West Hove’s Juniors won this event in
2007, for the third time in the last 4 years, and have high
hopes of doing well again this year.
The 3rd match this year was played at West Hove and our best 4
scorers were Dan Milligan with 40 points (with a 2 under-par
gross score of 68), Rory Crookshank with
38, Jonny Ingram with 37 and Max Card with 36 (a total of
151). This was a splendid score, but we were pipped by a
strong team from the Dyke who scored 153. They now lead the
table by 27 points (see below).
The match played
at Hollingbury on 14th June was won by the Dyke - their fourth
consecutive win. The hosts, Hollingbury GC, scored 139 and our
3rd place with 134 points was achieved by Jonny Ingram (gross
level par 72 for 41 points), Luke Giles (34 points), Rory
Crookshank (31 points) and Ryan Stafford (28 points).
The West Hove team
won the JBL event at Mid Sussex GC on 7th August with an
aggregate score of 149 points.
Team scores were: Adam Hatcher 40 pts, Luke Giles 40 pts
(Individual winner 0-12 hcp), Ryan Stafford 34 pts, Tom
Coppard 35 pts.
In the last match which took place at Singing Hills on 7th
September, the West Hove team came 3rd with 127 points. This
gave a respectful final score of 1178 points and in 3rd position
this year, just 22 points
behind the winning team, Hollingbury Park GC.
