Our Juniors' Captain, Ryan Stafford, won today's 2011 West
Hove Junior Championship
Having been runner-up last year, Ryan Stafford won today's
West Hove Junior Championship in breezy conditions with gross
rounds of 80 & 75, for a total of 155 and a winning margin of
three shots. The net prize-winner was Emmet O'Faolain with a
5-under-par total of 135 (67 + 68).
Twenty Juniors competed and they deserve great praise for (a)
completing the 36 holes in breezy conditions, (b) finishing
their rounds without a single nil return, and (c) for turning
up to the prize presentation smartly dressed. They are a
credit to their Club.
The Club Captain, Pete Rodger, presented the prizes assisted
by the Junior Organiser, Ken Stafford.

2011 - Sophie Kennard
wins two further competitions
In June we
reported that 16 year-old Sophie Kennard won the SCLGA's
Junior Girls' Championship. Well, her winning ways have
continued in the past week with two further notable titles.
Firstly, on Monday 1 August she competed for the SCLGA's
'Beatrice Murray Prize' at Ham Manor GC. This is a County
Order of Merit and Daily Telegraph Qualifier event and Sophie
won the scratch competition (and a very helpful £75 voucher!).
On Friday 5 August
at Stoneham GC in Hampshire, Sophie played in the EWGA's South
Region Girls' Championship and excelled to win the 36-hole
Handicap Championship with a score of 136 (68 + 68).
27 July 2011 -
Another SCGU success for West Hove GC - this time for our
Juniors' Section
Ken Stafford, the Club's Junior Organiser and Gary Salt,
General Manager, are delighted to report that our Junior
golfers won yesterday's quarter-final of the Covey Cup to
reach the semi-finals for the first time. The Covey Cup is the
SCGU's inter-Club Foursomes Knockout competition, off
handicap, for junior golfers from Sussex Clubs. This success
was achieved despite many changes having to be made because of
holidays and we now eagerly await to see who we meet in the
semi-finals.
In yesterday's home match against Cooden Beach GC, we won 2½ -
1½ with the following pairings;
Ryan Stafford (Captain) & Jack Smith
Frankie Ingham & Jorge Osborne
Alex Jago & Aston Allan Foord
Sam Cissell & Joe Morley
17 July 2011 -
West Hove's Alexander Jago won today's Junior Open
This SCGU 'Junior County Order of Merit' competition
attracted 45 players from 18 golf clubs from as far away as
South Herts GC (home of the Vardon grip). In unseasonably
squally conditions, it was won by 13 handicapper Alex Jago who
shot an excellent gross 79, just pipping last year's champion
Matt Greenfield (Pyecombe GC) and Tom Curry (West
Chiltington). The net prize-winner was Miss Polina Zotova
(Cottesmore GC) who scored a net 65 playing off of 33.
Once again, special thanks are due to West Hove's Club
President, Michael Phillpot, and Junior Organiser Ken
Stafford, for organising this increasingly successful
competition. Michael and Ken were both grateful to the
participants who had forfeited the opportunity to watch the
last day of "The Open" on television. Today's winners (shown
below) received their prizes from West Hove's Club Captain
Pete Rodger.

5 June 2011 -
West Hove's Juniors continue to make progress
Further to our
news story dated
3 May 2011, the Club's
Juniors have made further steady progress. In today's second
round of the Alan Covey Cup we beat Ham Manor GC 3-1 in wet
and windy conditions. The winning pairs were Greg Andrew &
Jack Smith, Tyler Hounsome & Robert Haggart, Jorge Osborne &
Joe Morley with Frankie Ingham & Alex Jago this time being the
unfortunate losers.
3 June 2011, West Hove hosted the Dockerills' Junior
Brighton League match between nine local teams. Ken Stafford,
our Junior Organiser, reported that this year the Club had
entered two teams.
Our team of Alex
Jago, Jorge Osborne, Aston Allan-Foord and Ryan Mill scored
104 points to win the best team prize and our other team of
Greg Andrew, Sam Cissell, Sophie Kennard and Robert Haggart
scored 95 points to finish in third place.
Ken was impressed with both teams' scoring as conditions were
not made for golf as the wind was really gusting. Jorge
Osborne played particularly well to win the individual
stableford prize with 41 points and Sam Cissell achieved 38
points. The Club wishes Ken and our Junior teams all the very
best in their forthcoming matches.
3 May 2011 - West Hove's Juniors beat
Ifield GC in the first round of the Alan Covey Cup
On Sunday 1 May, our Juniors
hosted a team from Ifield GC in the first round of the Alan
Covey Cup. This prestigious Sussex County Golf Union
competition is a team foursomes knockout event for junior
golfers. Each team comprises four pairs and we were
represented by
Ryan Stafford,
Greg Andrew, Frankie Ingham, Jack Smith, Tyler Hounsome, Alex
Jago, Robert Haggart and Aston Allen Foord.
The match ended
all square at 2-2, so our 'nominated' pairing of Greg Andrew
and Jack Smith had to play a 'sudden death' play-off from the
first hole. Fortunately, they recorded a par to win and take
the team through to the second round.

Congratulations go to Sophie Kennard, who plays
off 9, for winning the scratch prize in the SCLGA
Junior Girls Spring Meeting at Chartham Park GC on
18 April 2011. On the front nine she had a triple
bogey but recovered her composure to shoot just two
over par on the last eight holes to record a gross
81.
