CONGU (The Council of
National Golf Unions) is the body in this country which administers
the Unified Handicapping System. Like the R&A, they too have
introduced new rules and procedures which will become effective from
1st January 2008.
In overview the key features are:
i.) Supplementary Scores – a procedure to allow Members to submit
scores for handicap purposes outside of competition play.
ii.) Nine-Hole Qualifying Competitions – these may be held at the
discretion of the Club in strictly controlled circumstances, again
for handicap purposes.
iii.) Other changes include the provision of a separate Competition
Scratch Score (CSS) for “away” players in open competitions, new
directions on the use of Handicap Allowances and broader advice on
how the “Annual Review” of handicaps is to be undertaken.
These are all matters for Match & Handicap who will keep Members
advised when and where appropriate. |

changes have been introduced to improve clarity and reduce penalties
to ensure they are proportionate. Members will be able to obtain
their own FREE copy of the rules from the Clubhouse over the next
few weeks. Further information can be obtained by visiting the R&A’s

Our new Club Captain, Dennis Baker, had his official
‘drive-in’ today and achieved a distance of 143 yards 2
feet. He arrived by stretch limousine and was driven down the 14th
fairway and then escorted to the tee by Hayley Tennant and Lynn
Stoner our bar manager.
As has become customary, the newly elected Juniors’ and Seniors’
Captains were also invited to drive-in. On a cold but bright day
in front of a sizeable crowd watching from the Clubhouse balcony,
the Juniors’ Captain, Lewis Jackson, recorded a fabulous 244 yards 1
foot and the new Senior’s Captain, Brian Port, reached a
respectable 166 yards. Thanks to the generosity of the Members well
over £1,000 was raised for Dennis’s two charities, the Martlets

Ryan Stafford achieves a remarkable hat-trick. Fourteen year old
Ryan Stafford, who plays off 6, won the Renwick Trophy today at
Hollingbury Park GC in the Sussex County Golf Union's Steve Stone
Tournament. He recorded the best scratch score for the under 14 age
category with a score of 76, against a par of 72, but what was
particularly remarkable was the fact that in the previous 2 years he
had won the under 13 and under 12 trophies too! Well played Ryan. |

The Club is very proud
of its Juniors
who became runners-up in the English National Final of
the Home Nations Inter-Club Championship held on the
Marquess Course at Woburn GC. At 6,744 yards, this beautiful
championship course is over 500 yards longer than West Hove's, but all
the team acquitted themselves well. Our new Juniors’ Captain, Lewis
Jackson, scored an impressive level par gross 72 which
was the second best score of all competitors, and this pleased his
grandfather, Tommy, who had travelled down from Newcastle and was
today celebrating his 80th birthday. The team were
obviously disappointed at missing out on a trip to La Manga in Spain but they,
and the other players who played in the earlier rounds of the
competition, should be very proud of their achievements. The winning
team was Hallamshire GC from Sheffield who won by an
amazing 13 points. The championship trophy was presented to them by
Alex Hay, the retired BBC golf commentator and past professional at
Woburn GC. Our Juniors would like to thank the 20
plus supporters who made the trip to Woburn on this most enjoyable
day. |

Congratulations to our Juniors for reaching the English National
Finals of the Junior Team Golf Championships for the first time.
Six of our Juniors, Rob McGrory Jnr., Lewis Jackson, Dan Milligan,
Jonny Ingram, Max Card and Adam Hatcher (who stood in for Ryan
Stafford who was unwell) today played against nine other Clubs on
the lower course at Worthing GC. One gross score and 4 of the best
nett scores counted towards the team total and everyone played well,
particularly Dan Milligan who shot a splendid 2 under par gross
score of 69. This enabled our team to win this South Central
Regional Final by 4 shots from Bramshaw GC and thus qualify for the
English National Finals which will be played between 12 Clubs on the
Marquess Course at Woburn GC on Monday 22 October 2007.
We wish them well, as the winners at Woburn will qualify for the
Home Nations Final which will be a televised event at the famous La
Manga course in Spain between 6th and 11th January 2008. Watch this

The Club has introduced different coloured flags to indicate the
position of the hole on each green.
The R&A allows for this under "Decision 17/2" of the Rules of
Golf. So with immediate effect, a red
flag indicates the hole is near the front of the green, a yellow
flag indicates the hole is central and a blue and white chequered
flag indicates that the hole is towards the back. |

Rob was one of 12 boys chosen to represent England in the English
Schools' Golf Association team to play the Scottish Schools' team at
Westerwood GC, near Glasgow, today. Unfortunately he and his partner
lost their morning match 3 & 2 to help the home side to a 4-2 lead
after the foursomes. In the afternoon singles Rob played against a
+1 handicap player but acquitted himself very well, only losing 2 &
1. After 10 holes Rob was 3 down, but he then won holes 12,13 and 14
with birdie, par, birdie only to fail when his Scottish opponent
birdied holes 15 and 17. Scotland won the event by 10.5 points to

a challenging par 72 course perched on top of Kilsyth Hill with
magnificent views of the Campsie Hills and the Kelvin Valley. It
meanders through silver birches, firs, heath and heather, and is
considered one of the most beautiful parkland golf courses anywhere

Tom was one of 60 players to receive an invitation to play in this

The competition was a 36-hole medal, off scratch, over a tight
parkland course where the River Brent is a key feature on many of
the holes. Tom shot a 2-under par 68 in the morning to share the
lead with three others. In the afternoon he scored 67 to finish with
a 5-under par 135 which was good enough for him to win by 2 shots.
Well played Tom. |

The Sussex County Golfers’ Union held their Professional
Championship at WHGC. Over the past two days fifty-one
Professionals took part in this 36 hole strokeplay event. West Hove’s
Assistant Professional, Arron Trott, playing in his first
championship led the field after the first day with a creditable
level par round of 70 in very blustery conditions. He started the
second day in splendid fashion with three birdies in the first four
holes but was unable to sustain that form. He finished with a 71 to
come second overall on 141 - and this was good enough to win the
Assistant’s Championship. This year’s Sussex Professional Champion,
and winner of the Bill Watts Trophy, was Jamie Harris of the Nevill
GC. He won with a score of 139 which included an excellent
3-under-par 67 on the second day. |

West Hove GC win the BDGS Bill Weeks 'Victor Ludorum' Cup.
The final Brighton & District Golfing Society event of the year, the
Mixed Cup, was held at East Brighton GC today. Although the Club won
nothing in this event, we had amassed enough points over the season
to win the Victor Ludorum (this is Latin for “the winner of the
games” and means we scored more points overall than the other 3 members of
the Society).
WHGC won the Junior Cup, the Captain’s Putter, the Ladies
Championship, the Secretary’s Cup and the Professional’s Salver. We
were runners up in the Intermediate Cup, the Wentworth Smith, the
individual Championship, the team Championship, the Junior’s
Championship and the President’s Salver. Finally, we won the Plate

Dan Milligan is the new Sussex Boys Champion!
There is no stopping 15 year old Dan at the moment. On top of his
recent 3 notable wins he has capped it all by winning the SCGU
Sussex Boys Championship over the East Course at East Sussex
National GC. He led the other 80 competitors after the morning round
with a 1 under par 71 and then shot a level par 72 to finish with an
aggregate 143. He was caught by David Nickson of Mid Sussex who scored
72 and 71 so both lads had to play off down the par 5 tenth hole.
Both boys hit good drives before David laid up to the pond for his
second shot. Dan got out his 5 wood and hit the most spectacular of
shots, flying the pond to finish in the gully at the back of the
green. David then chipped on and 2 putted for his par but Dan
clinched the title by chipping and putting to get a well deserved
birdie to win the Championship. |

Dan Milligan has maintained his rich vein of form to win the
West Hove
GC Junior Championship.
On a hot and steamy day, Lewis Jackson (handicap 3) led the field
after the morning round with a level par 70, four in front of Rob
McGrory Jnr. (2) and five ahead of Dan Milligan (4). In the
afternoon, Lewis shot a respectable 73 to finish on 143, but Dan had
the round of his life to shoot a fantastic 4-under-par 66 to win the
Championship on 141.
There were some equally spectacular scores in the net competition,
where 16-year old Luke Giles, playing off 19, had gross rounds of 80
and 79 to win with a fantastic net 121 – he is now playing off 14!
The runner-up was Max Card (10) who scored a fabulous 71 gross (61
net) in the afternoon having been 4 under par at the turn. All
players deserve credit for competing in such extreme conditions –
and they would particularly like to thank all those Members who

Congratulations to our Juniors’ Captain, Rob McGrory,
for achieving a remarkable 4th place in the
English Schools National Championship Final. The 60 qualifiers
played in atrocious weather today at Walsall Golf Club. The
conditions were so bad that play was suspended for over an hour and
the competition reduced from 36 to 18 holes. This did not deter Rob
who played exceedingly well to score 72, just 2 shots behind the
winner who shot level par. The CSS went out to 73. Rob now has the
honour of being chosen to represent the English Schools against the
Scottish Schools later this year. |
